Welcome to Automatedwoodworks.com.  This site should be able to assist anyone in the process of building their own industrial quality cnc router. This cnc router is belt driven and will handle almost any types of material from soft aluminum to all types of soft and hardwood.   The plans for this router are available in any Autocad DXF or Adobe PDF format.   Click on Purchase my plans link at the right of the page for instructions.

Scroll down for tips on using cheap linear bearings and .250 plate steel as rails.

Machine Design:

This router was built for speed and accuracy. The design uses inexpensive 2x2 tube steel and rails from any salvage yard. (You just need to do some searching). I first designed it to allow me to cut out parts for my Radio Controlled planes. The  very 1st cnc router I built used acme 1/2 x 10 thread rod and for the length of 6 foot there was a lot of whip in the acme lead screw. I decided to look further for other options. So, while looking around the net for ball screws or the rack and pinion setup I ran across of pages where someone used sprockets and chain. On his web page he said that their was a lot of chatter in the chain drive. Well I do not want chatter and where there is chatter there is the dreaded BACKLASH.  Seeing other people using the belt drive system I came up with this setup.  This system has no backlash and there is no backlash compensate set up in the control software.  I am very pleased with how it came out.  Right now I have about  $1100.00 in this setup. That includes electronics, Router, and everything you see on it.

NOTE***   With all the linear rails on the market, You can use what ever type you want.  The gantry is not heavy. I have been working on a drawing using bearing blocks from CNCRouter parts. Click on the link below in CNC Links for a direct link to this great website.  Here is what it could look like with the use of the 8" bearing block and a 2.5" or 3.0" piece of .250 cold or hot rolled steel plate.  You could even place the plate upright.  The options are endless.  After the gantry sides are built then measure for the C-Channel and cut to length.
